Appendix 1. The full checklist of steps to follow when submitting data into NABat to fulfill USFWS Florida bonneted bat regulatory data submission requirements.

 

SECTION 1: START A NEW PROJECT IN NABAT

• Create an NABat user account if not already done

• Fill out “NABat New Project Form” Document

• Create project in NABat and verify project details are correct

• Select/create an NABat species list

SECTION 2: ORGANIZE THE ACOUSTIC FILES

• Organize raw files into survey event folders

• Set up Processed folder with mirrored subdirectories

SECTION 3: USE KALEIDOSCOPE PRO TO PROCESS INDIVIDUAL SURVEY EVENTS

• Fill out “FBB_DB_KPro_Stationary_Acoustic_Metadata” CSV template

• Open Kaleidoscope Pro

• Download Kaleidoscope NABat metadata forms

• Select appropriate options for INPUTS

• Complete metadata fields (NABat_Metadata_Form_Kaleidoscope_Stationary.xml)

• Select appropriate options for OUTPUTS

• Select appropriate options in Auto ID for Bats tab

• Enter appropriate settings for Signal Params tab

• Process Files

• Manual vetting of files

• Repeat above steps for every survey event

SECTION 4: RENAME ACOUSTIC FILES & CREATE PROJECT METADATA CSV

• Rename acoustic files

• Change input directory to parent folder with all processed files

• Select appropriate output directory and uncheck “WAV (orW4V) files”

• Disable “Auto ID for Bats” in classifiers menu

• Change metadata form (NABat_Stationary_Meta_Output_Only_KPRO.xml)

• Process Files

• Locate and review meta.csv

• Make sure all files that must be moved out of NOISE folders are moved

• Add weather parameters to meta.csv (if not done during processing)

• Change any “COTO”/“CORTOW” values to “CORA”/”CORRAF” in meta.csv

• Rename meta.csv if not already renamed (use project name)

SECTION 5: UPLOAD METADATA CSV & COMPRESS ACOUSTIC DATA

• Upload uniquely named metadata CSV

• Fix all errors if any present – re-upload metadata CSV if necessary

• Create tarball files for data to be uploaded into Partner Portal (< 3GB per tarball)

SECTION 6: COMPLETE PROJECT SUBMISSION

• Upload tarball files into Partner Portal

• Check missing files – upload as necessary

• Explore project and check for errors – if errors found, edit metadata CSV and re-upload

• Add final deployment and processing notes in Partner Portal (if any)

• Upload deployment photos for every survey event

• Upload project report and any other relevant project files

• Contact USFWS FBB Lead to inform of completed data submission

• Maintain backup of project for one year after submission

Appendix 2. Species that fall within the distribution of the Florida bonneted bat (CORA = Corynorhinus rafinesquii; EPFU = Eptesicus fuscus; EUFL = Eumops floridanus; LABOLASE = Lasiurus borealis/L. seminolus; LAIN = L. intermedius; MYAU = Myotis austroriparius; NYHU = Nycticeius humeralis; PESU = Perimyotis subflavus; and TABR = Tadarida brasiliensis). This table indicates which species to be included in the NABat species list and in the species classifier used in automated identification, depending on the county within which the survey took place. Y = yes, include; (Y) = yes, include, uncommon/unlikely; N = no, exclude. Refer to Appendix 3 for full county name.

* Files auto-identified as CORTOW represent calls from Corynorhinus rafinesquii, as the two species are considered acoustically indistinguishable and Corynorhinus townsendii does not occur in Florida. Since CORRAF is not an option available to check in the KPro species list, CORTOW is checked for data processing. Use CORRAF for manual vetting, then be sure to change the CORTOW auto-IDs to CORRAF.

 

† Files auto-identified as LASBOR represent calls that could be either Lasiurus borealis or Lasiurus seminolus, as they are considered acoustically indistinguishable. Do not include LASSEM in the classifier. When manually vetting for these species, use LABOLASE.

Appendix 3. The different counties considered within the distribution of the Florida bonneted bat (FBB), the 4-letter code for each county to be used when naming projects or processing data, and the source(s) indicating the county should be included within FBB distribution. In case counties outside of this list are surveyed for FBB (and/or have a confirmed detection), simply use first four letters of the county name, adding a “C” for the fourth letter when counties only have three letter names (e.g., LEEC = Lee County).
